Slide Show and Book-signing
by Andrew Ritchie
Worcester Public Library
Worcester, Mass.

Andrew Ritchie of El Cerrito, Calif., author of the definitive biography of Major Taylor, presented a slide show about "the Worcester Whirlwind" and signed copies of his book, "Major Taylor: The Extraordinary Career of a Champion Bicycle Racer." Sales of books and posters benefited the Major Taylor Association.

Ritchie, a social and sports historian with a special interest in the early history of the bicycle and early photography, is also the author of the highly acclaimed social and technical history of cycling, "The King of the Road," and the forthcoming "Bicycle Racing: Sport, Technology and Modernity, 1867 - 1903."

The Worcester Historical Museum is displaying a bike that purportedly belonged to Major Taylor. Experts consulted by the museum have not been able to determine whether the bike was Taylor's; Ritchie says it's possible.
