The racist cartoons below were among the images published in the cycling magazine Bearings in 1894 along with coverage of an issue of the day: whether membership in the League of American Wheelmen should be restricted to white people. Major Taylor weighed in with a Letter to the Editor, discussed here by biographer Andrew Ritchie. The LAW did adopt a "white only" membership rule that year; it wasn't formally repealed until 1999.
